Presentation by Dave Pagel, a local mountaineer, film editor, writer, and author of "The First Chinook," a book that tells this amazing, little known story in the form and spirit of Robert W. Service’s great Yukon ballads. Dave will recount the story of Walden and Chinook.
In the winter of 1917, an odd, golden-colored puppy was born in New Hampshire. Arthur T. Walden named the dog Chinook after the powerful winds he'd experienced in the mountains of Alaska during the Gold Rush. Over the next 12 years, Walden and his amazing First Chinook became front-page celebrities across the U.S., setting mushing records and popularizing the sport of sled dog racing. They established an entirely new breed of sled dog named after Chinook, and joined Admiral Byrd on his historic First Antarctic Expedition in 1928.
