Sawbill Wilderness Checkpoint

Beargrease Marathon teams will be arriving and departing at Sawbill on Monday, Jan 31st approximately 5am til 5pm and then again as they make their way down bound during the race on Tuesday, Feb 1st all day.

Fans can bring or rent a tent (from The Canoeist in Two Harbors, MN - 218 834-3523) and join us to experience traditional winter camping at the Sawbill checkpoint. On display, we'll have the latest winter tents and gear that will to take you where you want to go all winter long!

Veteran winter campers will be on hand to talk about what it takes to camp year around.

All Day Monday

Enjoy a warm chocolate chip cookie from gourmet trail chef Jon Farchmin. He'll be baking cookies with a wood stove reflector oven. Jon will also provide tips and tricks that will help fill your winter menu for your next winter adventure.

12 - 2 pm

Chris Gibbs of C5, Mike Keller from the Canoeist and other experts will demonstrate how to explore the outdoors with a canvas tent and wood stove hauled on a long, narrow toboggan. They'll teach you how to comfortably travel to places seldom seen by others during the winter months. They'll answer questions about your basic needs when it comes to planning your next winter trek and demonstrate different types of equipment and clothing used.

12 - 2 pm

Join C5 Adventure Photographer, Chris Gibbs with your camera to experience the Beargrease through the lens and pick up on helpful hints that can leave you with memorable images from this years race.

All ages welcome and NO RESERVATIONS NEEDED

About the Sawbill Checkpoint

The John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon is a prequalifying race to Alaska's Iditarod. Mushers will tend to their teams without assistance at Sawbill as one of the qualifications to the Idiatarod. Mushers will have a four hour manditory rest at Sawbill.
