MIKE KEYPORT | PRESIDENT
I am a Band member of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and also the very proud Great Grandson of John Beargrease. I live in Grand Portage and am employed as the Emergency Management/Safety Director for the Reservation. I could never fill the shoes of John Beargrease, I can however give this opportunity my all, so that we can carry on this tribute to such a great man.
JASON RICE | VICE PRESIDENT
A fan of this event since my childhood, I “caught the bug” for deeper involvement in the Beargrease back in 1996 as a local news anchor and reporter covering the race. That led to running the Beargrease mid-distance race 3 times using “leased” dog teams. My love of dogs, competition and adventure keep bringing me back for more! I’m proud of the volunteers, the vet team, mushers, sponsors and the fans that have helped keep this race alive for 30+ years!
KRISTINE HANSEN | TREASURER
Kristine is employed by Moline Machinery as an accountant. She has volunteered with Bentlyville in the past and assisted the DAHA with their fund raising campaigns for four years. Kristine has aided with the timing program for the Beargrease for the past two years and hopes to continue to fine tune that. Additionally, she brings with her accounting and finance skills and experience that will be of value as well as a willingness to help in area needed.
CARMEN SCHEMPP | SECRETARY
Carmen is currently employed as a Library Technician at the Duluth Public Library. Carmen lists strong supervisory, communication, and organizational skills as some of the talents she would bring to the board in addition to experience with special events and community service. She has volunteered with the Beargrease in a few different areas and is ready to deepen her commitment to the organization and to lend her skills and talents to the board of directors.
ED DALLAS | DIRECTOR
Though I no longer have dogs, I enjoy dog mushing/winter camping with friends. I also like canoeing in the BWCAW in the summer. I am retired and my current outdoor activity is long distance bicycle riding. I ran the Beargrease marathon several times in the 1980’s, was a Beargrease judge several years and handled for marathon mushers. I also helped with promotion of the Beargrease (talking at the State Fair, on radio stations, and at fund raisers). I also gave dog sledding talks and demonstrations at schools. Minnesota has a long history of dog sledding and we need to keep the sport alive. I would like to do my part in seeing that the excitement of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon is talked about for years to come. As a side note, I was in the movie “Iron Will”.
ERIN ALTEMUS | DIRECTOR & MARATHON MUSHER REPRESENTATIVE
Erin and her husband, Matt, live with their kennel of Alaskan huskies off the Gunflint Trail near Grand Marais. They moved to the area from Wisconsin because Northeastern Minnesota has more consistent snow and better trails.
JEAN VINCENT | DIRECTOR
A life-long Duluth resident, Jean became involved with the Beargrease in 2004. Since that time she has been road crossing coordinator, merchandise coordinator, Trail Mail coordinator and volunteer coordinator.
JESSICA PHOENIX | DIRECTOR
My dad was a dog musher in the Grand Marais area in the 1970’s. I loved his dog sledding photos which lead me to become involved with the race in 2000. I was in photojournalism school and drove up from North Carolina for a new photography adventure. Soon after moving back to Minnesota in 2001 I also did some handling and kennel sitting for Pat and Diana Faherty. More recently I began blogging for the race and coordinating the photo contest. I am excited for another new adventure and look forward to the added responsibilities and a chance to get more involved in the inner workings of the Beargrease.
KYRSTAL HUDACHECK | DIRECTOR & MID-DISTANCE MUSHER REP
Based out of Firestar Kennel in Cornucopia, WI, Krystal started racing about 5 years ago, but has been running dogs since a very young age. 2017 was her first Beargrease race.
LISA FRANKLIN | DIRECTOR & MARATHON MUSHER REPRESENTATIVE
I have been in customer service my entire career. My current job duties include financial statements and budgets as wells as expense control. I have great organizational skills and multitasking abilities. I’ve enjoyed the Beargrease for 15 years, both as a volunteer and spectator. I’ve been fortunate to help out in many different ways, from traffic control to dog handler, and even early morning road crossings. I was also once a handler for a private mushing team as well. I enjoy gardening, hiking, kayaking, 4 wheeling, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing.
MELISSA GROVER | DIRECTOR
I teach English language development to students who are learning English as a second or third language. I currently teach high school students after teaching at the elementary level for 12 years. I used the Beargrease race as a teaching tool this year. The highlight of that experience was watching two of my students get so interested in the race that they volunteered at the start line with me. I am interested in expanding the educational side of the John Beargrease for teachers and students.
MIKE LEVIG | DIRECTOR
Mike is a 30 plus year volunteer of the Beargrease. Most often found in the starting chute, Mike is the man seen in many pictures with all the Beargrease patches on his jacket! Most recently, Mike has assisted in the pre-race marking of the trail and as part of the trail boss team during the race. A retired letter carrier, Mike has passion for the outdoors, and helping people and groups. Mike is heavily involved with the local and regional ATV Clubs, and feels that experience and the connections make will be an asset to him on the board of directors. He would like to help maintain and build on relationships with the volunteers, sponsors and many communities on which the Beargrease relies.
