Split Rock Lighthouse State Park

Lake County State Parks

Lake County State Parks are rich in unequalled, natural beauty. Each park offers a unique experience and plenty of wildlife viewing.

  • Tettegouche State Park offers year-round camping, hiking, rock climbing, waterfalls, and cross-country skiing. Hike along lakeside cliffs with incredible views over Lake Superior. In the winter, enjoy candlelight walks, snowshoe events, and cross-country skiing.
  • Split Rock Lighthouse State Park offers hiking, biking, and fishing in warmer weather; cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat biking in the winter. Segments of the Gitchi-Gami Trail (a non-motorized, paved trail) run through this park. When complete, the trail will be 86 miles long; currently, 28 miles have been completed.
  • George Crosby-Manitou State Park is a backpack-only park in the North Country Wilderness. It is home to gorgeous, rugged scenery and spectacular views, cascading waterfalls through volcanic canyons, and peaceful Manitou River views. Summer offers steep hiking, fishing, secluded camping, kayaking, and canoeing. You can snowshoe in the winter, but there are no cross-country trails. For a more leisurely experience, you can stroll around Benson Lake Boardwalk and enjoy a picnic at the picnic area.
  • Gooseberry Falls State Park is home to a visitor center/nature store and a year-round naturalist. You can see scenic waterfalls and parts of the Lake Superior shoreline on the multi-use trails. A 2.5-mile segment of the Gitchi-Gami State Trail runs through the park. There is snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling in the winter; hiking, biking, and camping in warmer weather.
  • The North Shore Scenic Drive is 142 miles of spectacular vistas along the beautiful and rugged shoreline of Lake Superior.

Outdoor Adventures in Lake County

Whether you are an empty-nester, a youthful adventure-seeker, or simply looking for new places to explore with the family, Lake County and the North Shore have boundless opportunities for outdoor recreation, adventure, exploration, and fun for all ages and abilities!

Winter
  • Cross-Country Skiing: The North Shore area offers hundreds of kilometers of cross-country skiing trails through forests and alongside lakeshores and hillsides. Choose trails based on your ability level and whether you want classic or skating stride.
  • Snowshoeing: You can snowshoe on many of the hiking trails in the local state parks. An inexpensive way to explore and exercise!
  • Snowmobiling: The North Shore State Trail is a 146-mile trail system. Many local trails connect with the State Trail. There are many entry points, maintained rest areas, parking areas, and it is groomed weekly. Food, lodging, and gas are available on some of the local trails.
  • Hiking: Winter hiking can be beautiful and rewarding if you have the right equipment and are prepared for winter weather. So many places to explore in Lake County and The North Shore!
  • Fat Tire Biking: Winter bike trails have been created because of the popularity of fat bikes (Bikes with 3.8-5-inch tires specifically designed for snow.) Trails are groomed to pack the snow and minimize ruts. Popular places to ride are Split Rock Lighthouse State Park and Lake County Demonstration Forest.
Summer/Fall/Spring
  • Hiking: From scenic lakeside walking trails to the famous Superior Hiking Trail to the trails in its gorgeous state parks, hiking is the best way to experience the beauty of the North Shore. 
  • Biking: Lake County is a mountain biking destination with 20 miles of nearly completed mountain bike trails between Beaver Bay and Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. The mountain biking master plan will feature trails for beginners and advanced riders when finished. The Uptown Trail, Sonju Trail, and Gitchi-Gami State Trails are perfect for leisurely bike rides with scenic views.
  • Swimming: North Shore beaches are some of the most unique and beautiful in the country. Refresh in crisp, cool, refreshing waters!
  • Golf: Golf courses abound in Lake County!
  • Birding: So many opportunities to discover local birds and their habitats in Lake County State Parks!
  • Fishing: Best places to fish in Lake County…Lake Superior, Christianson Lake, Nine Mile Lake, Stewart Lake, Greenwood Lake! 
  • Climbing: Best places to climb in Lake County…North Shore Adventure Park, Tettegouche State Park (Palisade Head is a premier climbing spot at Tettegouche.)

Thankfully, great fans like you helped us out during the final hour to provide this vital supply for our amazing dogs.

What to expect when you come see the Beargrease Marathon

Watching the Beargrease is not for the faint of heart. Neither is it for dress shoes, fancy clothes, makeup, or showers (we’re only half joking). Watching the race or volunteering involves spending hours outside in the harshest weather that Northern Minnesota can offer.
