I grew up near a small town west of Minneapolis, working and playing on my grandpa’s farm with my brother and the horses. I was particularly drawn to one horse in particular, who I proceeded to train under saddle and show at low levels. He accompanied me on my move up north. Partly due to my past with horses, I’ve always admired the mutualistic relationship between working animals and humans. While I was working at a tour kennel, there was a dog that didn’t quite fit in, who happened to be out of Ryan Miller’s lines. After falling in love with and adopting her three years ago, my desire to learn more about the training and lifestyle of sled dogs grew. This led me to Lost Lake Racing. When I’m not mushing or horseback riding, I can be found working at the Ely Vet Clinic, canoeing, hiking, reading, or being creative in some way.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START RUNNING SLED DOGS AND HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU STARTED?
I started running sled dogs at a tour kennel when I was 18. I’d heard stories from my best friend in high school about a dogsledding trip she went on, and I was fascinated with the idea of it. The dogs at that kennel were mainly retired, and I began to wonder what their lives had been like before running tours.
