Learning how to run sled dogs at my age is like starting a new life, which is basically what I needed to do after having lost my only child to Epilepsy. After my son, Iner, went to the spirit world when he was 26 years old, I wasn’t interested in much, and I just drifted through each day. Then I met Steve Bergemann, who is now my husband, and he introduced me to life as a sled dog musher, and yes, I still married him anyway.
So have I gained a supportive husband and friend and the partnership of many canines (mainly Alaskan Huskies with some Hound crosses as well). I found the learning curve for mushing to be pretty steep, and it’s been a couple of years in the process, but now I am looking forward to my first sled dog racing season. While spending many hours on the trail learning to be worthy of being the person on the dogsled runners behind these wonderful working dogs, if I can also raise awareness and promote understanding of Epilepsy, I will achieve many goals.
