I grew up on a 600 acre off grid llama farm in northwestern Ontario, where I developed a love for all critters, as well as the outdoors. My mom was a teacher and my dad was a pilot, as were his parents before him. I followed the family tradition and became a bush pilot in the summer months. I happened to go dogsledding in my off season with a good friend, whose dad has a dog kennel (Borealis Sled Dog Adventures), and I was offered part time work. By the end of the second week I had been there every day. That was 9 years ago and I never left. Burton Penner, owner of Borealis dogsled, has been a real inspiration over the years, and has taught me most everything I know about dogs and guiding. Mushing has become a real passion for me, as well as a career. The dogs’ enthusiasm is absolutely infectious, and they are the toughest, hardest working animals I’ve encountered. The best part is that they do it all with wagging tails and happy faces, and it’s difficult to be unhappy when you’re surrounded by that much joy.

What a sled dog looks forward to most after a long day of racing is a nice bed of straw! But guess what happened at last year’s race? Someone stole all our straw right before the race start!
